The Mask and Me
Supported by WUK Theater Quartier and Flausen + i was lucky enough to spend the last 2 months exploring the world of Me and my Masks.
The project started as an open research to discover deeper into the qualities of Mask play, Music and physical orientated communication. (See german Project description below)
Looking back it has been a time of development in many aspects. Here is a break down of my research time.
Mentorship and Direction
It was clear from the start that i use this opportunity to receive input to my work and process from Physical theatre Pedagog Giovanni Fusetti. www.helikos.com
Together we have been researching my 'personal Masks' and putting them into play. With Giovanni i have been and will continue to explore the play field that i open up from what i find in the creature i call 'me''. Discovering what we discover and flowing in the direction to make a solo show.
I know mask play to an extent and shapeshifting between characters is always a pleasure. I'm still excited in the findings of shapeshifting, transforming characters and themes closer to my heart out to the stage. To look first inwards rather than outwards is a new way of creating theatre for me and so far is very enlightening on a personal level as well as a proffetional creative level.
Mask Making and exploration
I have been using the time out of the studio back in the atelier making masks.
After learning Mask making and play under the guidance of Matteo Destro https://www.ateliermatteodestro.com/
I have now been exploring further. Inspired by my findings in play and exploration of my 'personal Masks'
Spending my time with the clay going around and around, back and forth looking for something i have no idea of. But knew i would know it when i found it.
A beautiful, frustrating, and meditative process in its self.
To the left you see the process of my search for something to do with 'An open/relaxed forehead' an impulse that came from exploring the opposite movement of the mask below. With his scrunched up eyebrows.
I am currently working on a third mask, in search of the intellectual, superior rational forehead.
Residency time at WUK theatre Quatier for physical exploration and play
Alone and along with Juri Kussmaul my show partner from Barada Street www.baradastreet.com we dove into half mask play with music. How does a certain mask play music? how does he sing? when do we loose the mask? or not even need it anymore? How to we transpose the music into the world of these masks? This played illusion of reality. This transposed forms of human.
It is rigorous work as my personal love/fun/style of music must always be held at bay by the mask player. We continue to work on this and to find the qualities that keep the masks alive and kicking.
What now?
Through exploring mask, and moving with an idea of a solo show on the horizon a theme of Masculinity appeared.
A theme Ive been interested in some years more intensely, after starting the Male Idiot workshop
i have opened up a gateway of playing around with these topics.
Mask-alinity with the word 'mask' already inside has developed as the continuation of this projects theme. Through what i have discovered of my own masks, and the fun and tragedy of them i will now start devising a show for the stage. So Watch this space!
I have some dates set up to work intensively with Giovanni to develop further and with Barada Street we are developing towards a masked music comedy show. When ever festivals and possibilities to play will open up again.
The Mask and Me German original Project Text
Auf Grund der Corona Situation ist das gesamte Touring von Barada Street zusammen gebrochen und es ist schwer mit zukünftigen Workshops und Auftritten zu planen. Anfang 2020 habe ich mit einer neuen Masken, Music, Comedy Show Idee ‘Maskaska’ angefangen. Aber leider alles ist jetzt abgesagt worden.
Die Förderung würde mir die Gelegenheit geben, mit Masken, Clown, Music, Bouffon, Geräusche und der Sprache in die Tiefe zu gehen. Und diese Zeit ohne Möglichkeiten auf der Bühne sein zu können zu nutzen.
Nach einem intensiven Maskenbau und Maskenspiel Studium bei Matteo Destro im Italy, https://www.matteodestro.com/ habe ich etwas magisches entdeckt. Es gibt eine besondere Verbindung zwischen Masken, Performer, Publikum, Traum welt, Geschichte und ‘human nature’. Durch das Maskenspiel sehen wir uns selbst, der human Archetypen und es gibt uns die Möglichkeit alle Menschen zu spielen. Das Maskenspiel verändert unsere Blick, es ist etwas unbekanntes aber es fühlt sich doch sehr bekannt an.
1. In The Mask and Me, möchte ich zuerst die Möglichkeit erkunden mich selbst zu transformieren mit der Maske, um etwas anders zu sein.
Mich interessiert der Veränderungsprozess.
Ich will unterschiedliche Wege finden wie man Gesichten erzählen kann.
Dazu benutze und baue ich Masken und erforsche unterschiedliche Wege zu kommunizieren.
In der Recherche möchte ich vom meinem Vorfahren lernen.
Physical theatre ist vom Comedia Dell’arte im Jahr 1500 in Italy geboren. Sie sind das ursprüngliche Maskenspiel von der Strasse. Damals haben Sie alles gespielt, Musik, improvisation und verschiedene Charakteren. Ihr Spiel ist auf die verschiedenen Archetypen der Menschen begründet und fordert einen intensiven Umgang mit Körperspiel. Wie kann ich das in unsere moderne Bühne und Zeit übersetzten?
2. im zweiten Teil meiner Recherche geht es um Musik. Die Förderung gibt mir der Möglichkeit in dieser Zeit neue Wege zu entwickeln, wie ich live music und mask zusammen bringen kann. Wie kann ich live Musik und Geräusche in die stumme theatre form bringen? Ich möchte Musik als kommunikations Werkzeug wie eine Sprache nutzen, anstatt das Spiel mit einem Soundtrack zu hinterlegen.
3. Im dritten Punkt geht es um Kommunikation. Im Masken Theatre ist der Körper Sprache Kunst. Ich bin sehr interessiert daran was es heißt stumm zu sein und andere Möglichkeiten der Kommunikation zu finden.
Was ist wichtig in Austausch? Was verstehen wir eigentlich? Ich will der Sache auf den Grund gehen. Was ist die Essence der Kommunikation? Was verlieren wir durch Worte?
Die Welt ist im moment voll mit Corona Masken. Aber diese stehen in Verbindung mit Angst und Schutz. Kann das vielleicht auch neue Wege der Kommunikation eröffnen.
Was ist performance jetzt? Für mich und für der welt, was ist modernes Masken Theater für eine Welt unter Masken? Was ist Sprache ohne Mund? Nur Augen und Körper?
